Worth EVERY CENT!! They were an open book and I came out learning SO MUCH! It was hands on, we went through over 20 poses and learned their editing to a “T”. Highly recommended. You get your money’s worth and then some, seriously. I feel like they’re my friends and if I have a question, Carrie or Britt always comes through to this day. AMAZING EXPERIENCE!
I attended the June Baby as Art Workshop and am 100% glad that I did. I learned so much and it really gave me the push and insight I needed to take my newborn work to the next level.
While considering workshops over the years, I always held the thought in the back of my mind that if Carrie and Brittany ever offered a workshop I would absolutely try my hardest to attend. They did and I did!
I really enjoyed the intimacy of the small group. I was by far the least experienced professional photographer of my group, but I was made to feel welcome, my questions were heard and answered, and I was able to see and participate at a level that allowed the instruction to really sink in.
I felt that Carrie and Brittany did a good job of covering everything in the itinerary and were flexible enough to switch gears if something wasn’t working so that everything could be covered. Ideally, it would have been nice to have an extra day or even an extra half-day, as there’s always so much more that could be learned. The time was used very well, however, and I feel that the workshop delivered everything it promised.
I, too, enjoyed the goodie bag, especially the gauze, the knitted wrap (use both at my sessions all the time), and the Asuka book is just a treasure. The online forum feature is nice too.
Carrie and Brittany are wonderful people and such a talented team. I think the greatest benefit of the workshop was just watching them pose and shoot the babies. We had a lot of fussy babies in our group–disappointing b/c we were not able to cover as many poses, but helpful as we were able to witness different soothing techniques. I have a much greater level of confidence in my posing and soothing from watching the two of them work.
I would highly, HIGHLY recommend this workshop to any competent photographer who wants to improve his or her newborn photography. It is not a workshop that will reduce your session or processing time or improve your business, but if you hope to master the art of baby posing it’s probably the best money you could spend.
I attended the first baby as art workshop in May. It exceeded my expectations and I learned so much. Carrie and Brittany were so down to earth and were great instructors. I felt like I’ve known them for years. They were open to all questions and shared lots of information. The workshop was very hands on and it was wonderful to watch them work together and how they use natural light to create such beautiful images. The goodie bag was wonderful and loved the asuka book that I refer to before every newborn session. I feel much more comfortable photographing newborns and I believe my work has improved in every aspect (not just newborn photography). The only draw back was when it ended because I also had a great time too.
I attended the August workshop with Carrie and Britt, it was amazing! I was a bit tentative because I had already completed my allotted workshops for the year but when an opening became available last minute I decided to jump at the opportunity to learn from the masters.
They were so warm and welcoming, and down to earth, you would think that someone that was so well regarded as the best in their photography niche would have an ego, not so with these ladies, they were willing to share all of their secrets and did not hold back at all.
Every spare minute was packed full of info, even during the “down time” it was open Q & A. I learned so much about how every little detail matters and how to light and soothe a baby, they are true baby whisperers.
My newborn work has improved dramatically after attending this workshop.
Carrie and Britt poured their souls into teaching us everything we wanted to know and we basically worked non-stop from the time we got up until it was time to leave for their airport. There was a lot crammed into the two days. Besides just showing us all the tips and tricks they really focused on training us how to see the light. It was like a whole new of thinking for me, and I think that is why it has impacted my photography so much. I really took a lot away from this workshop and if you don’t believe it look at my flickr set before and after June 2009.

what I liked about the workshop
•we got to see a ton of different models (7 in all) including some very fussy babies. If all the babies had been perfect we would not have gotten to see Britt and Carrie really have to work to sooth a baby.
•The agenda was loose and the attendees got to help determine what we did and these poses that Britt and Carrie showed us.
•Britt and Carrie have stayed available to us via their online form, answering questions and giving us resources.
•I liked the workshop was limited to 6 attendees keeping it small and imitate, giving us each a chance to ask questions and try posing the babies.
I get emailed weekly with photographers asking me “Is this workshop worth it for me?” It’s a hard question to answer because I think it depends on the individual and where they are in their leaning curve. I will say that this is not a beginner workshop. No time was spent on basics of exposure or metering. You really need to be comfortable with your camera and comfortable with photoshop. A lot of working with newborns is just getting hands on experience so if you haven’t worked with babies quite a bit already your not going to become a magical baby whisper overnight – it takes practice but watching Carrie and Britt work is a good place to start.
This workshop was AWESOME!! Would def recommend it!! Carrie and Britt were very open and honest!! Not to mention sweet and just fun to be around!
I attended the Baby as Art workshop in August. I was very impressed with every aspect. It was well planned and every detail was thought of. It was a packed weekend with even the “down” time was filled with question answering and discussions about photography.
Carrie and Brit opened up their homes to us and held nothing back, even personal questions about work and family were opened honestly and openly. I really liked that they took the time to make sure everyone had their questions answered completely.
I learned a ton about newborn posing and the the way they do their workflow. I also had the eye opening experience when they covered natural lighting. A couple of tweaks on my method and I now have awesome lighting. I was also blown away by the clean images that are on their website and since attending their workshop my post processing of my images has gotten better. I am using their techniques on most of my pictures now, not just on the newborns.
This workshop was well worth every penny I spent. I learned so much in that weekend. The one downside is that it seemed too short, I could have stayed and watched them work for another couple of days!
I always said that I would only spend money on a workshop that was taught by a photographer who perfected his/her craft. When the Baby As Art workshop was announced I was super excited- it was wonderful!
To know where I am coming from, before the June workshop I only had about 5 newborn sessions. I was not very happy with them. I was not comfortable with newborns as I do not have children of my own, nor have I spent ample time with them.
During the workshop, everything was covered. We were able to watch requested poses and see how Carrie and Britt work together. We were able to see editing and learn the beautiful black and white conversion. ALL questions were answered- all of them!
Carrie and Britt are beyond nice- I was quite surprised! They were so sweet to everyone and it was very genuine so I never felt uncomfortable and I generally clam up in groups of new people. My point is that the environment of the workshop was warm, relaxed, and friendly.
I left feeling much better about working with newborns! I have had one session since the workshop, and it was far better than what I was able to do before- on top of that I really feel that I will be able to improve. I learned things at the workshop that I would not have picked up on my own- or from forums or other photographers.
The “goodie bag” was great! Very very useful and practical. Everything was well put together and was great quality. I can ask questions to them even though I have left the workshop too- which is great!
If I had to think of any criticisms- my only personal disappointment was that we did not get to see as many poses done as I had hoped for. However, this is ONLY because we had a particularly cranky group of babies overall. When you are dealing with that many newborns you just never know what to expect! On the flip side it was great to see all the different calming/soothing techniques.
Overall, I would recommend this to someone who wants to learn natural light newborn photography in Carrie and Britt’s style. I did not use natural light for the majority of my newborn shoot following the workshop, but much of the information I learned translated well with using a strobe too. I am very glad I went to the workshop and even though I am incredibly frugal, I think it is certainly worth the admission price if you want to learn the “secrets” of “Baby As Art” newborn photography.
